Do you want to be an IB School? Theory of Knowledge

School heads

JAVIER ARCE - IB public school Director.

The International Baccalaureate is recognized as the world’s best high school curriculum for its high level of academics for fifth and sixth-year students.

A committed group of principals, coordinators and teachers who are eager to take on new challenges work together day by day for educational excellence.

¿What is the relationship between my high school and the Ministry of Public Education (MEP)?

The MEP recognizes the IB as an elective. The MEP pays the salaries of all teaching staff and makes time available for training and professional development.

The schools that have already implemented the program have assimilated it successfully into their regular schedules and operations. It has had a “cascade effect” on the entire school, not just the students and teachers directly involved in the IB program, resulting in a better level of academics for everyone

MEP support goes beyond allowing its schools to host the program. The ministry’s backing has been vital in developing the program’s needed infrastructure.

The IB is a 2-year program administered during the 11th and 12th years of study. Students decide whether to follow the program while in their 10th year. At the end of the program’s first year, students take their social studies and civics exams. At the end of the IB’s second year, students take a series of exams and complete assignments that are reviewed outside the country. In this way, the student earns both the National and International baccalaureates.

¿How does my high school get sponsorship from Asobitico to adopt the IB?

The association provides financial support to Costa Rican public schools that have been approved through a prior selection process and wish to adopt the IB.

The school submits an sponsorship application to Asobitico via http://www.asobitico.org/quiere_ser.php

Each application received is assigned a representative to evaluate the school through visits with the principal, teachers, students and parents.

Asobitico announces at the end of each year the schools that will be sponsored the following year.

Selected schools receive technical partnership from Asobitico personnel throughout the authorization process and period the IB is offered at the school.

Along with the sponsorship comes personalized technical assistance from our staff with information and support throughout the process. At Asobitico, we work under the principles of commitment, transparency, respect and openness. In the event that a selected high school opts out of the process, it will do so with the full understanding of our association.
